When Skyfall director Sam Mendes began talking about returning to the world of James Bond for the franchise’s 24th film—which we now know is Spectre—he said that it would act as a thematic, but not narrative, continuation of Skyfall. Judging from the first trailer, however, Spectre seems to have pulled a lot of its plot threads from the destruction of Skyfall itself.
“You have a secret,” Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) tells Bond (Daniel Craig) as he looks at mysterious photos where faces have been mysteriously burned away. Are we meant to believe that Bond’s father was wrapped up in global crime syndicate SPECTRE (Special Executive for Counter-Intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion)? The synopsis is appropriately vague:
A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE.
And isn’t that Christoph Waltz as Blofeld? The accent, the way they intentionally keep him obscured in the trailer… Even though Sherlock’s Andrew Scott is rumored to be the movie’s villain, we don’t see him at all in this trailer. Maybe in the next one, which will hopefully be less dark and more fun!
Spectre comes to theaters November 6.
